Leadership in global health will be the first topic in a new series of President’s Leadership Lectures from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
The event will be held on 5th June 2018 (6pm-7.30pm) at the College’s headquarters on 232-242 St. Vincent Street, Glasgow.
The free lecture will be delivered by Professor John Meara and surgeon David McAdam, and will be the first in a series of public events run by the Royal College which aim to provide a public platform for some of the key issues facing medicine in the twenty-first century.
Announcing the line-up, College President David Galloway said:
“The College are delighted to be inviting both Professor John Meara and David McAdam to speak here in what will no doubt be a thought-provoking lecture on global health leadership.
“This lecture follows the publication of our global health report last year, Global Citizenship in the Scottish Health Service: the value of international volunteering which urged the Scottish health service to ‘grasp the opportunity’ and embrace a culture of global citizenship. It is hoped that this will initiate and support international health partnerships with less developed economies. This reflects Scotland’s heritage and values, and in turn, offers substantial benefit to Scotland’s health sector workers, our healthcare services and our nation.”
Our eminent speakers are both internationally renowned for their work in this area.
Professor John Meara is Kletjian Professor of Global Surgery in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change within the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also Co-Chair for the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, an initiative focused on improving global health by increasing access to safe and affordable surgery in the world’s poorest regions.
Dr David McAdam has spent his entire career as a missionary surgeon in central Africa, working in a series of remote settings in both Congo and Zambia and represents a wonderful example of a ‘boots on the ground’ approach to surgical provision. His clinical experience and breadth of specialty expertise is virtually unparalleled.
Both will be also honoured with Honorary Fellowships at the College’s Admission Ceremony due to take place the next day (6th June) at Bute Hall, University of Glasgow.
